I can’t express to you how bastardized and horrendous the re-cut of this scene is. That’s an example of a well crafted scene.

The pacing in the original cut pretty much accelerates from that point.

The scene is carefully paced, doesn’t reveal too much and, at the end, we get our hero’s “call to adventure”. Obi-Wan and Luke then discuss the properties of the Force, talk about his father, the clone wars, Luke gets his lightsaber, then we finally see the whole message from Princess Leia. Luke has just been attacked by the sand people, Obi-Wan scares them off, and takes Luke and the droids back to his hut. Welcome to the one scene change that manages to accomplish all of these things. Let’s paint the scene. They don’t ruin the rhythm and pacing of the scene, they don’t ruin character motivation or plot, and they certainly don’t wreck carefully revealed expositionIthinkyouseewhereI’mgoingwiththis. You wouldn’t believe how many things are just slightly different from the original release. Somehow, don’t ask me how, I managed to get past all these emotions and continued on with the movie. Threepio now doesn’t mention Leia in the opening scene (arbitrarily), a couple ADR layers were removed from secondary characters, etc. My first reaction was shock followed by, in sequential order, denial, confusion, rage, and inevitably nausea. Sound editing and scoring sync up better with the action on screen, laser blasts are added where previously absent, some re-designed establishing shots – these don’t bug me. Long answer: fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck no.Īt first the changes are small. So, any version that seeks to correct these mistakes for the OCD’d fanbase (myself included) should be welcomed, right? Short answer: yes. Let’s all admit that the original Star Wars hasn’t held up over the years quite as well as Empire has: poor sound and sound mixing quality, editing and continuity screw-ups, and a shit-ton of matte lines run rampant. In case you missed the last entry, a fan from my new neck of the woods (Adywan is his name) sought to reconcile all the versions and re-cut the first (or fourth depending on your point of view) Star Wars film, adding new special effects, fixing technical errors… basically begging for a cease and desist order from Lucas’ legal team. Others have decided to go about it a different way. I have nine different opened Luke action figures and I still think it was a good investment. I’ve personally expressed my annoyance by handing over all my money to Lucasfilm. We’ve all had to deal with the blinding rage that comes with a new version of a Star Wars film released every four years, kinda like really geeky PMS.
